All that rain that fell on East Hawai`i Island resulted in a record 9.84 inches falling at Hilo Airport on Friday. That breaks the old rainfall record for December 26 of 3.56 inches, set in 1961.
While there are more than a hundred rain gages around the state, many of those gages are automated, and some also belong to agencies other than the National Weather Service. So official NWS rainfall records are kept only for Lihu`e Airport, Honolulu Airport, Kahului Airport and Hilo Airport.

Power in the downtown/Nu`uanu area appears to have come back online around 5 am. However, driving around downton and Ala Moana, there are still some major intersections where the traffic signals are still not working. Some of them have police officers directing traffic, others do not. By and large, most people are treating those intersections as a four-way stop.
It doesn’t appear that EVERYONE has power back yet. Some of the people I follow on Twitter say they’re waiting, especially in Mililani.
As for weather, there was an earlier flood advisory for O`ahu, but that has been allowed to expire. There are still pockets of heavy rain that are moving through the island. Right now downtown, some light rain is falling.
Now, for something official: There are currently no watches or warnings posted around the state. The Big Island of Hawai`i is finally no longer under a flash flood watch, and the rain there has finally let up. However, conditions remain unstable over the state as the upper level low drifts westward. Think of it as wet tradewind weather on steroids. The weather should continue to be of the wet tradewind weather variety through the weekend, although I reckon Sunday might be a little drier.
As for the rest, keep it here on KITV.com, and watch the latest on KITV 4 Island Television News at 5 and 10 tonight.

Officials say a lightning strike surged the system… and as a safety precaution… generators were automatically shut down.
That’s similar to what happened in 2006 when the big earthquake caused power to be knocked out across the state.
Authorities say tonight, four of the five generators at Kahe Power Plant were shut down… as well as five of the six generators at the Waiau power plant.
Hawaiian Electric says it plans to gradually restore power at their power plants and then they’ll restore electricity to the island one section at a time… though again, they admit that could go on throughout the night.

Power has been lost for most of O’ahu since about 6:30 pm Friday.
At this hour most of the island is still without power except for a few areas in west Oahu. The island-wide blackout shut down shopping malls and strands passengers at the airport, and officials say the electricity could be out until daybreak tomorrow.
Per Lynne Unemori from HECO:
“We lost 3 major transmissions lines between Kahe Power Plant and town when that happened it caused the electric system to become unstable as a result HECO generating units and those private/independent power producers tripped off-line in order to protect them from being damage.”
HECO is not working to find out cause because their main focus is to restore power to customers. At this time POWER ONLY in parts of the Waianae Coast, Kapolei & Makakilo
Crews are working to restart generating units in Waiau… HECO wants to stress that as they begin to restart generating units/power it is important that it is done safely and carefully to avoid damage. HECO wants customers to plan to NOT have power overnight… Possibly 12 hours.
Traffic is heavy in many areas, so if you can avoid driving…do so. If you do need to head out, DOT officials say treat roads as a 4 way stop.
According to callers, the following places are open:
- Wahiawa Foodland (non-perishable items only)
- Star Market Ewa Beach
- Whole Foods Kahala (Cash Only)
- Times Kahala
- Hawai’i Kai Foodland
That’s all we have so far.

The east and southeast portions of the Big Island of Hawai`i remain under a flash flood watch, which has been in effect for more than 12 hours. During that time, there’s been areas that have received more than a foot of rain, with rainfall rates approaching three inches per hour at times.
Here are selected rainfall totals for the Big Island for the 24-hour period ending at 5 pm Friday, in inches:
- Waiakea Uka 12.61
- Laupahoehoe 12.00
- Pi`ihonua 10.67
- Pali #2 7.11
- Glenwood 7.01
- Hilo Airport 6.98
- Hakalau 5.47
- Pahoa 4.72
- Pahala 4.01
- Kapapala Ranch 3.53
- South Point 2.35
- Honoka`a 1.83
- Mountain View 1.64
Rainfall rates on Maui have decreased substantially since this morning. Even so, it still looks like some of that moisture will make its way to the northern islands overnight.
