Officials say a lightning strike surged the system… and as a safety precaution… generators were automatically shut down.
That’s similar to what happened in 2006 when the big earthquake caused power to be knocked out across the state.

Power has been lost for most of O’ahu since about 6:30 pm Friday.
At this hour most of the island is still without power except for a few areas in west Oahu. The island-wide blackout shut down shopping malls and strands passengers at the airport, and officials say the electricity could be out until daybreak tomorrow.

The flash flood warning for the Island of Hawai’i has been extended from 7:45 pm to 10:45 pm.
Due to the power outage on O’ahu, rainfall totals have not been updated and only reflect what has fallen since 5 pm Friday.
