Windy Wednesday
Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Remember Monday? Remember the howl of the tradewinds? After a slight decrease in strength Tuesday, tradewind speeds should ramp up again Wednesday. Sustained speeds should reach 20-25 miles per hour in most areas (near 30 m.p.h. in windier areas like the Central Valley of Maui.) Gusts should be in the 30-40 m.p.h. range.
In order for [...]

Another Interesting Week
Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Another sign of what fall is like in Hawai`i this week, as we’ll experience different weather over each day of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Today and tomorrow will be a bit similar, with light passing showers windward and mauka, and slightly breezier trades tomorrow.
Then the changes begin, thanks to an approaching cold front, which is [...]

Returning to Normal
Sunday, November 23, 2008

As of 4 am, the state is no longer under a flash flood watch, as the upper low responsible for the wet weather moves away. The system, currently 250 miles or so northwest of Kaua`i, will still draw up extensive cloud cover from the southwest, but its influence on the rain is diminishing.
For today, expect [...]

Rain May End Up More Helpful Than Harmful
Saturday, November 22, 2008

By all means, do not let your guard down — there is still a chance for flash flooding on any island through Saturday night. However, it appears this rain event is not packing as much punch as it could of.
Starting with Kaua`i Friday morning, O`ahu and Maui County Saturday morning, and parts of the Big [...]

Send Us Your Rain Photos
Saturday, November 22, 2008

Share your pics, especially if you’re on the neighbor island. Upload them here. We’ll get a slideshow started, and maybe show some here on the blog, too.
Here’s one of mine to kick things off. Note that the clouds are below the rim of Punchbowl.

O`ahu Update and Wet Football
Saturday, November 22, 2008

The island is now under a flood advisory until 2:45 pm. The heaviest rain has been in the Ko`olaupoko area, and near Kailua and Waimanalo. The flood advisory mean you should stay away from streams and drainage ditches, to be aware of hazardous driving conditions, and most importantly, not to cross fast flowing or rising [...]

The Rain Over O`ahu
Saturday, November 22, 2008

Here’s the statewide Doppler radar this morning. The storm has now developed a surface trough which is dropping heavy showers for O`ahu, Moloka`i and Lana`i, and isolated showers for Maui and the Big Island. There are sill some leftover showers on Kaua`i as well.
One unexpected feature of the trough is that there are some pretty [...]

Rain Reaches Kaua`i
Friday, November 21, 2008

It’s been raining on Kaua’i rather steadily now since 12:30 or so for the Barking Sands area of West Kaua`i, and light rain is recorded at Lihu`e Airport. There was a flood advisory posted for Ni`ihau, but that has been allowed to expire as of 2 pm.
The progress of the rain has been slow but [...]

Rain Update: 10:21 am
Friday, November 21, 2008

Looks like more rain is arriving on the Garden Isle. Also, there’s an area of heavy rain in yellow that’s to the southwest of Kaua`i. Current projection is that it will arrive on SW Kaua’i sometime around 1 pm.
As for O`ahu, it looks like some lighter showers are likely to begin at around 2-3 pm, [...]

Closer and Closer
Friday, November 21, 2008

Here’s the statewide Doppler radar picture from this morning. Heavy rain has moved closer to Kaua`i from the west, but the big area of heavy showers to the southwest is abundant tropical moisture being drawn toward the Garden Isle. Looks like Justin’s scenario in the previous post is on track. We’ll keep you updated.
Ben.
